STIHL Connected Portal

Context & challenge:

STIHL Connected is a digital platform designed for managing smart tools. The primary goal of this project was to integrate robotic mowers into the STIHL Connected Portal, making it easier for users—both B2B professionals and individual consumers—to monitor, control, and manage their robotic mowers.

Key challenges included:

• Designing an interface that caters to multiple user groups with varying technical expertise.

• Ensuring efficient usability, especially for business use cases where time and precision are critical.

• Creating an intuitive integration of a smart device into an already established platform.

The business impact was significant, as this was the first major smart device added to the STIHL Connected ecosystem, setting the foundation for future IoT expansions.

My Approach & Process:

As a lead UX/UI designer within the UX team, I was responsible for:

• Leading the UX and UI work for mower functionalities, ensuring a seamless and user-friendly experience.

• Coordinating user research to understand pain points and behaviors of different user groups.

• Developing concepts for key functions, refining them through discussions with stakeholders, management, and developers to ensure high-quality implementation.

The project required intense collaboration across multiple teams—developers, engineers, UX designers, and senior management—to align technical feasibility with user needs.I designed a dashboard that provided:

• At-a-glance summaries of tool status, upcoming maintenance, and usage statistics.

• Detailed drill-down views for fleet managers to analyze tool performance and identify patterns.

• Customizable notifications for real-time alerts about critical maintenance needs.

The interface was built with scalability in mind, ensuring that it could grow with the user’s needs, whether managing a single tool or a large fleet. Additionally, I worked closely with the development team to ensure that the hardware data was seamlessly integrated into the digital experience, providing accurate, real-time insights.

Outcome & Impact:

• Successfully launched an updated STIHL Connected Portal, seamlessly integrating robotic mower functions.

• While specific performance metrics are unavailable, the client was highly satisfied with the result.

• The project set the stage for future smart device integrations within STIHL’s digital ecosystem.
